The Journey

Understanding Your Experience

You did not see it coming. Or perhaps you saw fragments, but nothing prepared you for the moment the papers were served and you were told you could not return to your home. You may now find yourself in a hotel lobby, a car in a parking lot, a friend’s spare bedroom, or staring at a screen at work that no longer registers. Your body already knows the size of this loss even if your mind is still trying to assemble the pieces.

This is not simply a legal or relational change. It is the sudden loss of your nervous system habitat: the home, the daily routines, the familiar sounds and smells, the ordinary rhythms that once told your body it was safe. The breakfast table, the school drop-off, the bedtime story, the presence of your child in the house each night, these anchors are gone. In their place is the particular silence of a system that has lost its reference points.

What you are experiencing is grief, but a form of grief the world often fails to recognize. It is disenfranchised grief: the sorrow that receives no casseroles, no time off, and no social permission to be devastated because your child is still alive and you will see them on a schedule. It is ambiguous loss: your child is geographically close yet the daily relationship has been severed. It is narrative loss: the grief over the family story you were living inside that turned out to be incomplete or impossible to continue.

Many fathers in this season feel disoriented by their own dysregulation. The chest tightens. The hands shake. The mind goes quiet in a way that is not peace. You may be the man who once served as the primary emotional regulator in your household, yet now you find yourself struggling to regulate your own nervous system while remaining present for your child.

This experience is not weakness. It is not a mental health crisis in the way it may feel. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do when it detects a threat of this magnitude. The body does not make accommodations for credentials or competence. It simply responds to the loss of what it was organized around.

The Day the Door Closed Fathers Therapy Group exists for fathers who refuse to let this crisis define their fatherhood. This closed, six-week virtual group therapy program provides a shame-free biological explanation for what your nervous system is experiencing, practical tools for restoring safety, and a clear path toward Independent Fatherhood grounded in your own values rather than the other parent’s narrative, approval, or interference. You will learn to track your own state and your child’s simultaneously through the Attunement Map so you can offer regulated presence even when presence costs you everything you have.

You are not broken. You are a father who has lost something that mattered enormously, and your body knows it. The work ahead is to understand what is happening inside you and to begin building the relationship that outlasts any court order and extends across the full arc of your child’s life.

The Clinical Framework

This program rests on three integrated pillars that provide a precise map for your experience.

First, Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, offers a biological, shame-free explanation of what has happened to your nervous system. It helps you understand the sudden loss of your nervous system habitat, the home, routines, and daily cues that once signaled safety, and gives you language for the dysregulation you may be feeling.

Second, the Kübler-Ross five stages of grief are applied specifically to the living loss of daily fatherhood. This framework addresses disenfranchised grief, ambiguous loss, and narrative loss in a way that generic divorce support rarely does.

Third, the original Independent Fatherhood framework teaches you to build a father-child relationship grounded in your own values, independent of the other parent’s narrative, approval, or interference. Central to this is the Attunement Map, a practical tool you will learn and use immediately to track both your nervous system state and your child’s, enabling regulated presence even in acute grief.

The program also provides age-specific guidance for children aged five to twelve, teenagers aged thirteen to eighteen, and adult children. Faith-integrated tools, such as Scripture and prayer, are offered alongside clinical practices as optional regulatory resources.

This is not generic support. It is a clinically rigorous, attachment-based experience led by a marriage and family therapist who has personally walked this path as a father.

Program Details and Differentiators

Both the Texas Therapy Group and the Fathers Coaching Workshop are closed groups that meet virtually for six weeks. Sessions are held online, allowing participation from the comfort and privacy of your current location.

Each program includes the copyrighted companion workbook to The Day the Door Closed as a structured daily practice tool, plus access to a private online community for support between sessions.

Key differentiators include:

  • Leadership by Chris Putnam, a marriage and family therapist practicing at the master’s level in Texas, certified Jai Parenting Coach, and Fellow in Thanatology, who has personally experienced this crisis as a father.
  • Grounding in Polyvagal science rather than generic coping strategies.
  • Introduction of the Attunement Map as an immediate practical tool for father-child connection.
  • Specific focus on high-conflict co-parenting, blocked or limited contact, and remaining regulated while in acute grief.
  • Age-specific guidance for children aged five to twelve, teenagers aged thirteen to eighteen, and adult children.
  • Faith-integrated approach: Scripture and prayer are offered as regulatory tools alongside clinical practices, without being exclusively faith-based.

The Texas Therapy Group is licensed clinical therapy available only to participants physically located in Texas. The Fathers Coaching Workshop is structured group coaching available nationwide and internationally.

This is not a generic divorce support group. It is a clinically rigorous, personally grounded experience designed for the educated, professionally accomplished father who values competence and rarely seeks traditional therapy.

Investment and Next Steps

The Texas Therapy Group is offered at a single package price of 597 dollars for the full six weeks. This investment includes the copyrighted companion workbook to The Day the Door Closed, all session materials, and access to a private online community for support between sessions.

Each closed group is intentionally limited to 5 members to ensure deep, focused clinical work and meaningful connection. New cohorts for the Texas Therapy Group and the Fathers Coaching Workshop are currently being formed.

Payment plans are available in three installments of 199 dollars each. A limited number of need-based scholarships are also offered for fathers who demonstrate financial need.

This pricing reflects the specialized clinical framework, original intellectual property, and structured group format that makes high-quality support more accessible than individual sessions.

Next Steps:

  1. Schedule a brief eligibility call to confirm the group is the right fit and to answer any questions.
  2. Complete the short registration form and submit payment to secure your place in the next cohort.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a closed group? A closed group means the same small set of participants, limited to 5 fathers, begins and completes the six weeks together. No new members join after the group starts. This format creates safety, trust, and deeper work than open support groups, where people come and go.

How does this program differ from generic divorce support groups? This is not a generic support group. It is a structured, clinically grounded program that uses Polyvagal Theory to foster a shame-free understanding of nervous system responses, applies the Kübler-Ross grief stages to the living loss of daily fatherhood, and teaches the original Independent Fatherhood framework, using the Attunement Map as a practical tool. It addresses disenfranchised grief, narrative loss, and high-conflict co-parenting with age-specific guidance.

What is the difference between the Texas Therapy Group and the Fathers Coaching Workshop? The Texas Therapy Group is a licensed clinical therapy available only to fathers physically located in Texas. What are the three clinical pillars of the program? The program rests on Polyvagal Theory for nervous system safety, the Kübler-Ross five stages of grief applied to living loss of fatherhood, and the original Independent Fatherhood framework with the Attunement Map.

How does Polyvagal Theory help fathers in divorce? Polyvagal Theory provides a biological, shame-free explanation of why your nervous system feels dysregulated after the sudden loss of your home, routines, and daily connection with your child. It gives you clear language and tools to restore safety and remain regulated.

What is the Attunement Map and how do I use it? The Attunement Map is an original, practical tool that helps you track your own nervous system state and your child’s state simultaneously. You learn to use it immediately to offer a regulated presence even when contact is limited, or emotions run high.

What is Independent Fatherhood? Independent Fatherhood is the practice of building a father-child relationship grounded entirely in your own values, independent of the other parent’s narrative, approval, or interference. It focuses on a lifetime connection rather than short-term custody schedules.
